“Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.”
—Colossians 3:15-17, The Message
LCA offers a comprehensive choral program from the elementary level all the way through high school.
Honors Choir (Elementary Level)
Honors Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Tirzah Gerber, is a co-curricular auditioned group open to 5th and 6th graders. It is an extension of the classroom music and vocal training they are already receiving in their weekly music classes. The students meet once a week during the second half of the school year and study a wide variety of choral literature. For many, this is their first exposure to music in the choral setting. In the Spring, they present three concerts: LCA Student Chapel, an evening concert for family and friends, as well as taking their music to the community at Farmstead Assisted Living Home in Andover.
Festival Choir (Junior High School Level)
Festival Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Beth Olson, is a curricular class open to all 7th and 8th graders. It is one of several fine arts classes available to students to fulfill their junior high fine arts requirements. Students are introduced to the basics of singing technique and choral singing. They study a wide range of choral literature including classical, gospel, Christian contemporary, Broadway, and pop. They perform three evening concerts a year. They have also performed at the Mall of America, Trills & Thrills Festival, Minnesota Music Educators Middle Level Festival, Farmstead Assisted Living Home, and Champlin Shores Assisted Living Home.
Concert Choir ( Senior High School Level)
Concert Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Beth Olson, is a curricular class open to 9th-12th graders, with approval from the director. Students are encouraged to further develop their singing technique as individuals and as a choir. They are also introduced to the use of solfege as a sight reading technique and review the basics of reading and writing music. They study a wide range of choral literature including classical, gospel, Christian contemporary, Broadway, and pop.
Concert Choir performs three evening concerts a year. They participate in Large Group Contest on an annual basis. Over the last four years, they have received high marks from judges with Superior ratings three out of the four years. Judges have made comments such as, “you sing very musically;” “great sensitivity to the text;” “stylistically authentic;” and “a commendable job by all singers.”
Besides on-campus concerts and Large Group Contest, Concert Choir has performed at the Mall of America, the Trills & Thrills Festival, the City Center Atrium, and several local churches. Biannually, Concert Choir takes their music “on the road” for Choir Tour. They have toured to such locations as Chicago, Boston, and St. Louis. While on tour, they perform at Christian schools, churches, assisted living homes, as well as public places like Chicago’s Union Station. Tour is always the highlight of a student’s experience in our choral program.
“Oh, let me sing to God all my life long, sing hymns to my God as long as I live! Oh, let my song please him; I’m so pleased to be singing to God.”
