Today’s Reading: 2 Samuel 11

Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar…

Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab…

Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth…

And David the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife.

(Matthew 1:3, 5&6)

Earlier we compared Ruth’s genealogy to the one found in Matthew’s gospel. The author of Ruth starts with Perez and ends with David. Matthew starts with Abraham and ends with Jesus. But an interesting thing happens when Matthew gets to the part of his list that mirrors the section found in Ruth. He adds women. Four of them. Other than Mary, the mother of Jesus, these four are the only women he mentions. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and one more.

The one who had been Uriah’s wife.

The one who has fathered a son by David.

The woman Bathsheba.

Most of us know her story well. Bathsheba was the beautiful woman who stirred the desire of King David while he walked on his roof and caught sight of her bathing and stole her love and killed her husband and eventually took her as his wife. Not the finest love story. And honestly, a puzzling one. As the story continues Bathsheba becomes the wife of the king and she conceives his child but as punishment for David’s sin God says the child of the already grieving woman must die. And then a second child is conceived and this one God allows will not only live but will become the heir to the throne and in his time the wisest and richest king to ever live. King Solomon. The son of Bathsheba.

And so her story and her name will be remembered and recorded and included in the history and the family tree. And along with Tamar and Rahab and Ruth, the woman Bathsheba will be covered by the wings of a God who can turn any story into a love story.

In the wise words of Henry Longfellow, “Music is the universal language of mankind.” This quote certainly goes into the modern day idea that we are all connected through music. Two bands that agree with these ideas are Mumford and Sons and Foster the People. These musical groups are both rising in this generation with songs like “Pumped Up Kicks” (FTP) and “The Cave” (MAS). Young people these days are starting to look into the more “alternative” side of music. It’s quite a romantic thought to be one with music and to be one as a body. I asked some students their thoughts on these two emerging bands and Kimberly Aspen, a freshmen, gave her two cents on Foster the People: “I like the background vocals and rhythm. It’s all very new and interesting.” The album that brought them up to the surface was Torches. This album is an indie crossover between pop and punk rock, introducing almost a new genre of music.

Mumford and Sons are also another grand example of “popular alternative” music. Formed in 2007, these band members all share one purpose: “to make music that matters without taking themselves too seriously.” This band is considered one of the most talented of this time. With their variety of instrumental talents, their ability to sound quality while they are live is a bit more difficult to come by nowadays with everything being auto-tuned and computerized. Senior Abby Kisler also agrees with this statement: “I love them because their lyrics are deep and…well…I just love banjos! Which makes me like their sound even more!” I agree Abby! Overall, the recent music culture has experienced a rise of alternative genres.

Feel the Breeze

By: Sam Nauman

Can I get a ROARRRR? How about a gentle Purr? LCA sports fans this fall where over the top at the varsity volleyball games! Regardless of whether they were decking out in white or brightening up the room in orange, the stands were never quiet. When asked about the fans this year, Lexi Weddle said, “They were a volleyball team’s dream! They were always at every game, and whether we were winning or losing, they stayed until the end! We said before just about every game,’Let’s win this for God and the fans.’”

But the fans didn’t just get our players pumped up. They also challenged the other team’s fans to get involved too! The New Life game showed it best when our fans got so into it that they started off with a little white board that said “No Life – 0” and “LCA Fans – 2” and escalated all the way up to backhand springs! Nate Bertsch helped us picture the game perfectly when he said, “We all switched sides when the girls did, and we all had headaches from being so loud, so we just passed the Advil down the line. We talked to the girls on the other team a lot, and they were getting really annoyed! It was great!” In the end the Lady Lions ended up losing in the fifth game, but they were still so amazed at the dedication of their fans!

In the end the fans didn’t just bring a smile to the players faces and brighten the room with their matching apparel, they also were so encouraging and supportive to the players. They made sure they were still having fun even in a tough match. Regan Jones summed it all up perfectly when she said, “They were more than we could have ever asked for. They were so supportive and they kept our adrenaline and energy going. Their cheers were clever, and their positive energy reminded us what we are playing for – The Lord and each other.”

Article & Photo by Kimberly Aspen

This year, Legacy is playing a new note in the middle school music department. Violin, viola, and cello have united together to form a brand new orchestra.

The orchestra is a group of mainly 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who have become interested in the strings sections of musical instruments. 4th graders Grace Balk, Beth Dittberner, Madi Bruner, Jason Dupay, Jamie Nelson, and Hailey Ortquist, and 5th graders Brissa Dorff, Alexa Melby, Jessica Nelson, and McKorey Wims have all picked up the violin for orchestra this year. 6th grader Sydney Manske plays violin as well, and Thomas Frosch has taken up the viola. We also have one secondary student, junior Jianing Wu, who has made a fantastic start on cello.

Together, the small ensemble of young musicians combine to produce a lovely sound– one should look forwa

rd to hearing in the near future.

Everyone will get to hear them, in fact. Starting second semester, all grades of the orchestra will be coming together to start practicing. They hope to have their very first performance this spring. The students are very excited to share what they have accomplished with their parents and friends.

As the music programs grows during the next few years, and as Legacy moves into its new building, it hopes to expand the strings section to elementary, middle, and high school.

Today’s Reading: Joshua 2 & Joshua 6:15-25

The fourth chapter of Ruth ends with a family tree, a genealogy of the family of Boaz from Perez to David.

The first chapter of Matthew begins with a genealogy that extends from Abraham to Jesus. In Matthew 1:3-6 we find the same names found in Ruth’s list, but with a twist. Many who study the genealogy think it is quite significant that Matthew includes women – mothers of the family tree. What makes this inclusion even more fascinating are the specific women Matthew chooses.

Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar…

Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab…

Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth…

We have already looked at the stories of two of these women. Ruth, the widow from Moab, an outsider who devotes herself to the people and the God of Israel, who is covered by the wings of the Lord and the love of her guardian-redeemer. And Tamar, twice a widow, despised by her father-in-law, but not forgotten by God who gives her a child and a place in his family history.

But what about the woman, Rahab? Who is she?

If you know anything about Rahab, you might be surprised to find out that she is the mother of Boaz – and the mother-in-law of Ruth! We naturally think of Naomi as the mother-in-law, the one to whom Ruth pledges her love and devotion. But rarely do we consider the mother of the second husband – Boaz’s mother, Rahab.

Rahab has quite a story.

Rahab the prostitute. A title that will stick with her forever, even when she becomes the wife of Salmon, the mother of Boaz, the mother-in-law of Ruth.

But the title will not define her. It is Rahab’s story that will define her. It’s almost as if the title becomes a necessary reminder, lest we forget where she came from in light of where she ends up. Because Rahab, the prostitute, will end up in the most prestigious hall of fame of the saints of faith – a woman remembered almost exclusively for her righteous deeds.

Her story is simple, but profound. She hides spies and it saves her life. The spies are from Israel, spies sent by Joshua to scope out the cities they plan to attack. Jericho is one of those cities.

Interesting that Joshua would send spies. He was once a spy himself, and it ended up in disaster. More than forty years earlier Joshua was one of the twelve spies sent into Canaan, the land God had promised to his people. That spy mission put the conquest of the promised land on hold for forty years while the people of Israel were banished to the dessert as a punishment for their lack of faith. Joshua and his buddy Caleb were the two spies who trusted God and so they alone were kept alive to see the promised land.

Now they are old men leading the charge, prepared to conquer the land God has promised. But first they send spies. Go figure.

Fortunately this mission ends better than the first, in part because of the incredible faith of a prostitute. A prostitute who has heard the stories of God and is convinced. She believes. She understands. This God of Israel is the one and only True God and he is going to win. Jericho will lose.

Rahab makes a quick decision to get on the side of the God of Israel.

The rest is history:

By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. (Hebrews 11:31)

…was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? (James 2:25)

Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
and Jesse the father of King David. (Matthew 1:5-6)

Today’s Reading: Genesis 38:6-30

Through the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.

This, then, is the family line of Perez:

Perez was the father of Hezron,

Hezron the father of Ram,

Ram the father of Amminadab,

Amminadab the father of Nahshon,

Nahshon the father of Salmon,

Salmon the father of Boaz,

Boaz the father of Obed,

Obed the father of Jesse,

and Jesse the father of David.

(Ruth 4:12 & 18-22)

Near the end of Ruth’s story we find the elders at the city gate giving Boaz their blessing, and included in their blessing is the hope that Boaz and Ruth will become a family like the family of Perez.

Here’s something to think about. Perez was the son of Judah – Judah, whose name means “this time I will praise the Lord” (see previous blog post.) Judah was the son of an unloved woman – an unloved sister named Leah. But his mother gives Judah a name that praises the Lord. As it turns out, Judah’s life lacks praise, but his family tree is exalted. Judah, the father of Perez, becomes the great great great great great great great great grandfather of a man named David. King David, that is.

Follow this line even further and something even more remarkable shows up. (Check out the first chapter of Matthew’s gospel if you’re curious.)

But what about Tamar, the woman included in the blessing given to Boaz? Read it and you will see that Tamar has a sad story. (You might also note that being a woman named Tamar tends to result in the most unlovely love stories. For a story even more tragic than this one, see 2 Samuel 13.)

The Tamar of Genesis 38 has a hard life. She marries Judah’s son, Er, who is a wicked man whom God puts to death. Per the custom of the day, Tamar is then given in marriage to Er’s brother, Onan, who does something sinful and disgusting and God takes him out, too. There is one remaining son in the house of Judah, a young man named Shelah. Convention would make Shelah Tamar’s third husband, but Judah suspects that it might be bad luck to be the husband of Tamar (her husband’s tend to die young) and so Judah sends Tamar back to her own family to live as a widow.

Time passes and Judah’s own wife dies. Tamar is still a widow waiting to marry Shelah, but by now she knows there is a slim chance that this will ever happen. And so she comes up with a plan. It’s a crafty plan, and a strange one, but apparently not entirely despicable for the day, because the plan works. You can read the details for yourself, but the end result is that Tamar becomes a mother – a mother to a son named Perez, whose father is Judah. And it this child that becomes the blessing.

May your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.

Tamar, twice a widow and cheated by her father-in-law, becomes the mother of the most blessed family in history, and her name and her story will be remembered forever.

Generations later a widow named Ruth will join her.

The last blog was about our character program. I believe it is an important part of who we are and our mission of ”Cultivating Christian Leaders to Change the World”. I have the “opportunity” to talk to students about behavior that does not meet our Legacy expectations. This is another way of saying….I get to deal with students that are in trouble. This does not happen very often. I am very impressed with the behavior of our students. The vast majority are respectful and kind and on rare occasions need to be reminded of behavior expectations. On those occasions, I appreciate so much the ability to talk about Christian character. There is such a difference when you can remind a student of high expectations instead of rules. Our culture is starved for people who do the right thing because it is the right thing. I believe that by teaching these traits, putting them in a Biblical context, positively reinforcing the desired character traits and expecting our students to demonstrate them; we are making an important difference in their lives.

Under the direction of our extremely creative art instructor, Elise Valley, our upper school art students have created the mural pictured below and displayed in our main hallway. Wisdom, this month’s trait, will soon be added to the mural. It is a great visual reminder of the importance of Christian character in our school.
