Debate is an exciting, extra-curricular opportunity for those who enjoy exercising their minds. Teams are presented various topics for debate. They are given a set period of time to prepare an argument. The goal is to come up with a good argument in a short amount of time. Debate students are encouraged to “intellectually spar” with friends and relatives, to read about current events, and to think about controversial issues to help them prepare for debates. We will operate with the classic format, which places students into three sections:
- Novice – new students who need competitive practice, but who are not yet skilled
- JV – students who are generally skilled
- Varsity – students who show high skill
Under the direction of Mr. Ben McGowan, students will work on skills of research, organization of information into cases and arguments, and asking and answering challenging questions.
