All winter athletes in grades 9-12 and their parents should plan to attend our Winter Sports Information Night, Monday, October 17 at 7:00 pm. Please be sure that you have completed ONLINE REGISTRATION beforehand and have an up-to-date physical on file in the Health Office. (Sports physicals are valid for three years from the date of exam.) All sports fees will also be due at this time if you did not pay via credit card when you registered. Practice and game schedules are available on the athletic calendar for viewing or synching with your personal calendar.
Note: Athletes in grades 5-8 do NOT need to attend this night unless they are an eligible 7th or 8th grade athlete interested in trying out for the high school team.
BASKETBALL: GIRLS (Begins November 14)
The Girls Basketball Team will be led by 2nd year Head Coach Kyle Ague and will be assisted by Kaia Larson and Adam Hill. Coach Larson is in her 2nd season as the JV coach with the program and Coach Hill is joining the girls’ coaching staff after spending the past few seasons with the boys’ program and volunteering time last season with our girls. In addition, the team will look to returning Senior Captains Mari Smitsdorff and Cali Weddle to set the tone for their season. Both were named to the All-Conference 1st team in 2016 and led the team in scoring. We will be offering JV and Varsity teams for students who are in 9th-12th grade. If girls in 7th and 8th grades are interested in trying out for the high school teams please contact the coaching staff for information.
Note: MS Girls Basketball will begin Monday, November 28. Practice dates/times TBD once coaching staff is secured. All 5th-8th grade basketball athletes should plan to begin practice on this date unless they have tried out and made a team within the high school program during their tryout week November 14.
HOCKEY: BOYS (Begins November 14)
The Lions Hockey Program heads into the 2016-17 season with veteran coach Steve Larson leading the charge. Coach Larson will round out his coaching staff with Assistants Dan Moots, Ike Larson ’13, Tom Zych, and Dan Olufson ‘12. This season we will field a Varsity only team for athletes in grades 9-12. Although the team will not have as much depth as in recent years, the team will be led by a group of veteran juniors and seniors with great experience. Among them will be Captain Logan Pierro ‘17, top returning scorer Aaron Moots ‘17, and top goaltender Nic Leibold ‘17. As a co-op program, Lions Hockey welcomes athletes from PACT, Spectrum, and Concordia Academy to join Legacy as they skate towards another Two Rivers Conference Championship.
BASKETBALL: BOYS (Begins November 21)
The Boys Basketball Program will be led by first time Lions coach, Jon Barsness. A veteran coach with 19 seasons of high school and collegiate coaching experience, Coach Barsness is excited to take over a veteran team for the 2016-17 season. Led by a deep line of seniors and several returning starters, the Lions expect to be tested early with 4 games in 9 days to open the season. The program plans to have three teams (C, JV, Varsity). Assistant coaches Ed Thomsen and Charlie Walker will be joining Coach Barsness as they begin a new era in Lions Boys Basketball. Keys to success this year will be a quick learning curve of a new system, the senior leadership, and the ability to score from multiple positions on the floor.
Note: MS Boys Basketball will begin Monday, October 31. A separate email will be sent to all participants with coach/team/practice details soon. Game participation for 7th & 8th graders intending to try out for the HS program will be restricted to preserve their HS eligibility.
Legacy Ski Club is another great winter option open to all 5th-12th grade students interested in recreational skiing/snowboarding. There is room for 40 members. Trips will be on Friday or Saturday nights. A schedule and more details are available from Mr. Manske.
